BRIEF HISTORICAL SUMMARY
The Komondor is an old-established Hungarian herding
breed of Asiatic origin. His original ancestors almost
certainly came with the migrating Old Magyars, living as
stock-breeding Nomads, to the Carpathian basin.
GENERAL APPEARANCE
The Komondor is large in size and powerfully built. His
appealing outward appearance and dignified deportment
arouse respect and even fear in the observer. By nature
he is not ingratiating. His robust body is covered by
matted, corded, throughout dense, long hair. The body,
seen sideways, forms a prone rectangle, little deviating
from a square. The thickly coated head rises above the
body. The tail is carried hanging down with its tip bent
upwards, almost horizontal. The coat colour is ivory.
IMPORTANT PROPORTIONS
The body length sligthly exceeds the height at
the withers.
The deepest point of the brisket is
approximately on a level with half of the height at
the withers.
The muzzle is slightly shorter than half of the
length of the head.
BEHAVIOUR / TEMPERAMENT
He has an imperturbable courage in the guarding and
defense of the herds entrusted to him and the property
and home of his master. He attacks silently and
duringly. He regards his territory as his own property
and will not tolerate any other living creature in it.
His nature is suspicious. During the day, he likes to
keep a lying position enabling him to control his area.
At night, he is always on the move.
HEAD
Broad, in good proportion to the body. Even the dense
screen of hair does not make him appear out of
proportion.
CRANIAL REGION
Skull : Domed, brows well developed. Stop : Well developed but not too steep.
FACIAL REGION :
Nose : Straight, cut off blunt, black. Muzzle : Not pointed; bridge of nose straight. Lips : Black, tightly fitting to mouth and jaw
bones. Corner of mouth jagged. Jaws/Teeth : Jaws very well muscled, strong and
powerful. Even and complete scissor bite, according to
the dentition formula. Cheeks : Broad, of medium length. Eyes : Horizontally set, dark brown. The black
rim tightly fitting to the eyeball. Ears : Set medium high on the domed skull.
Clearly pendant from the base and V- or U-shaped. Not
raised neither when alert nor in attack.
NECK
Very well muscled. Should form an angle of 35 degrees to
the horizontal. In quiet or peaceful situations, it is
carried almost in continuation of the backline. Rather
short than of medium length. Without dewlap or neck
ruff.
BODY
Topline : Those parts of the body which form the
topline are broad and very well muscled. Withers : Sufficiently long, clearly defined in
front. Back : Short. Loin : Of medium length. Croup : Broad, of medium length, slightly
sloping. Chest : Broad, well muscled. Brisket of medium
depth, broad, long. Underline : Sligthly tucked up.
TAIL
Low-set, clearly pendant; tip of the tail shows a sligth
bend, almost to horizontal. It is desirable that the
tail reaches to the hock. When alert, the tail is
raised, at most, to the level of the back.
LIMBS
FOREQUARTERS : Judging of the limbs is highly
affected by the long corded coat. Front legs are
columnar and straight, parallel and vertical seen from
the front or the side. The chest is broad which results
in wide apart, strong and free moving legs. The limbs
are firmly connected to the body. Bone substance is
strong and powerful. Joints are large. Shoulders : The shoulder blades are moderately
sloping. Points of the shoulder blades placed vertically
over the deepest point of the chest. Forefeet : Large, strong with well knit toes.
Pads are slate grey, thick and well padded. Toenails
grey.
HINDQUARTERS : The position of the hind legs
supports the body with medium angulations. Continuing
the croup of medium length, broad, well muscled limbs
are required. Upper thigh : Strongly muscled, voluminous. Hind feet : Longer than forefeet, otherwise
similar. Dewclaws to be removed.
GAIT / MOVEMENT
Light, free and even. The stride is wide and ground
covering.
SKIN
The skin contains a lot of pigment and is slate grey.
Dark pigment at the gums and the roof of mouth
preferred. Diminished pigment and pink skin undesirable.
COAT
HAIR : : The whole body is covered by long hair.
The coat consists of a coarser topcoat and finer
undercoat. The characteristic coat is determined by the
relation of the top coat to the undercoat. The shaggy
coat, that tends towards matting is a basic requirement.
An equally dense, wavy, corded coat also occurs. The
smaller tufts of hair are less or not matted at all. The
coat is longest on the croup, at the loin region and on
the rear of the uper thighs (at least 20-27cm). On the
back, at the sides of the chest and at the region of the
shoulder blades, it is of medium length (15-22 cm), at
the cheeks, the eyebrows, on top of the head, on the
ears, the neck and the limbs, it is shorter (10-18 cm)
and at the lips and on the lower parts of the limbs
shortest (9-11 cm). Neither a combed nor a completely
neglected coat are desirable.
COLOUR : Ivory colour.
SIZE AND WEIGHT
HEIGHT AT WITHERS Dogs: Minimum 70 cm. Bitches: Minimum 65 cm.
WEIGHT Dogs: 50 – 60 kg. Bitches: 40 – 50 kg.
The breed shows few faults in type and is largely
uniform as it has always been bred with the same target.
FAULTS
Any departure from the foregoing points should be
regarded a fault and the seriousness with which the
fault should be regarded should be in exact proportion
to the degree of the fault.
In particular :
Lack of pigment on noseleather, eyes and rims of
lids.
Loose eyelids.
Ring Tail.
ELIMINATING FAULTS
Flabby construction, body lacking muscle.
Entropion, Ectropion.
Overshot or undershot, wry mouth.
Pricked, light ears.
Short tail (ending 3 cm above hock).
Heavy limbs and faulty movement.
Not ivory coloured or multicoloured coat.
Diversion from lower height limit as mentioned
in the standard.
NB : Male animals must have two apparently normal
developed testicles fully descended into the scrotum.
KOMONDOR
F.C.I. Standard No 53
Dated 13.04.1993
Country of Origin - Hungary.
BRIEF HISTORICAL SUMMARY - The breed concerned is an inherently
Hungarian sheepdog breed, which was brought to Hungary a thousand years
ago by Magyar nomads. Their lineage is that of various types of Asiatic
sheepdogs. GENERAL APPEARANCE - Being of imposing size, engaging
appearance and dignified deportment, he arouses admiration and also
fear. His typical coat lends his appearance a majestic and robust
character. His body is somewhat more rectangular than square. His head
appears as a tangle of hair above his back. The downward hanging tail
is raised slightly to horizontal during movement. The coat is white.
Important Proportions:
Length of body - approximately 104% of height at withers.
Depth of brisket - approximately 45% of height at withers.
Width of body - approximately 28% of height at withers.
Length of head - approximately 46% of height at withers.
CHARACTERISTICS - Characteristic coat which is either shaggy,
matted hair, or evenly tightly waved, narrow cords whose strands must
not be matted. (See also under General Appearance.)
TEMPERAMENT - This dog is not suitable for fondling and is tough
by nature. He is distrustful. In guarding and protecting, he shows
unshakeable courage and his attack is silent and bold. The territory
entrusted to him must not be entered by any stranger. In daytime, the
Komondor likes to lie down, but invariably so as to be able to watch its
territory. At night, it is constantly in motion.
HEAD AND SKULL - Cranial Region: Skull moderately broad, in good
proportion to the body, so that even his profuse coat does not make him
look unbalanced. Skull domed, longer than the muzzle, approximately 60%
of the length of the head. The head appears broad between the
cheekbones, the superciliary arches are well developed.
Stop: Well defined.
Nose: Nasal bridge straight, nose not pointed but forming a right
angle. Nose leather black.
Muzzle: Very broad, of medium length.
Lips: Fitting close to the teeth. Colour black or slate-grey. Black,
dark or slate-grey are preferred for gums and inside the mouth.
Jaws: Strong and powerful.
EYES - Oval shape with tight fitting lids, dark brown. Eyelids
dark or slate-grey.
EARS - Set on medium high and hanging down low directly from the
set-on, U-shape. Their length is approximately 60% of the length of the
head. They do not move either when animated or attacking.
MOUTH - Teeth: Correct scissor bite with 42 teeth required.
NECK - Medium length, rather short, no dewlap. Carried at an
angle of 35 degrees to the horizontal. In repose, it is sometimes
carried almost in extension of the topline.
FOREQUARTERS - Limbs: The long thick coat makes judging the limbs
difficult.
Forelegs; Pillar-shaped. The bones are strong and massive.
Shoulders: Shoulder-blades somewhat steep, firm.
BODY - Withers: Rather long, accentuated towards the front.
Back: Short. Loins medium length, muscular and broad.
Rump: Broad, medium length, falling away slightly.
Chest: Brisket of medium depth, barrel-shaped, long. Forechest broad.
HINDQUARTERS - The hair on the hindquarters is almost always very
shaggy or matted so that the rump and hindlegs seem to form a unit
which makes it very difficult to judge their proportions. Hindquarters
are rather steep in angulation and the legs stand quite apart.
Upper Thigh: Very muscular, broad, presenting a good surface for the
profuse coat.
Lower Thigh: Strong, forming a good surface for the profuse coat.
FEET - Front Feet: Round, large and tight. Pads well cushioned
and elastic. The pads and the strong nails are of slate-grey colour.
Hind Feet: Slightly longer than the front feet. Dewclaws must be
removed.
Pads and Nails: Dark or slate-grey.
TAIL - Low set on, definitely hanging downwards, the end slightly
raised. When animated, can be carried up to back level.
GAIT/MOVEMENT - Light footed and majestic. Extended trot,
covering the ground.
COAT - Skin: The skin is well pigmented and slate-grey in colour.
Dogs which lack pigment and have pink skin are undesirable.
Make-up of Coat: The whole body is covered by long hair. The coat
consists of a coarser outer coat and a fine, woolly undercoat. The two
together make up the characteristic coat, which is either shaggy matted
hair or evenly, tightly waved, narrow cords whose strands must not be
matted.
The coat is longest on the loins at 20-27 cm (8-10½ ins).
It is of medium length, 15-22 cm (6-8½ ins) on the sides of the brisket
and on the shoulders.
There is shorter hair of 10-18 cm (4-7 ins) on the muzzle, eyebrows,
skull, neck, ears and on the legs.
It is shortest, 9-11 cm (3½ - 4½ ins), on the lips and towards the
bottom of the legs.
After whelping, through constant work, illness or insufficient diet, the
Komondor can lose part of his long coat (on forequarters, belly and
brisket) as an exception, but not on the rump. A dog out of coat in
this way (the Hungarian shepherds say "He is undressed") is not
good-looking, but as this is a passing phase, it is not a fault.
However, at shows this must count as a fault in appearance and be judged
accordingly.
New-born whelps have fluffy, fine, shiny white curly or wavy hair.
After a coat change this will be replaced by a fleecy non-matting puppy
coat of medium length. Then the adult coat grows in, which the teddy
bear-like puppy coat helps to mat.
COLOUR - Colour of coat always white.
SIZE
For dogs: average height 80 cm (31.5 ins) min. 70 cm (27.5 ins)
For bitches: average height 70 cm (27.5 ins) min. 65 cm (25.5 ins)
FAULTS - Any departure from the foregoing points should be
regarded as a fault and its assessment should be in the exact proportion
to the degree of the fault.
Severe Faults: Faults of type seldom occur as the breed is pure-bred,
and the standard even, to a very high degree. Faults which occur
seldom, but occasionally, are:
Lack of pigment on eyelids, lips and sometimes on the nose leather.
Faulty mouth, especially in the region of the incisors.
Loose shoulders or weak pasterns.
Hindlegs not parallel.
Ring tail.
Lack of size.
Disqualifying Faults:
Pricked lightweight ears.
Flesh-coloured skin.
Short coat (on any part)
Stumpy tail.
Dappling.
Lack of, or flabby condition of the entire body.
NOTE - Male animals must have two apparently normally developed
testicles fully descended into the scrotum.
Komondor
FCI-Standard No 53
Dated 1966
Country of Origin - Hungary.
Name - Komondor: Hungarian
shepherd's dog, called "Komondor": Canis familiaris
pastoralis villosus hungaricus, Raitsits, 1924. General Characteristics, features, its uses.-
The species has a big body. Its exterior, its dignified behaviour
raise respect and astonishment and perhaps even fear in the onlooker. It
is not a kind species. Its structure is vigorous. Its long hair is
inclined to get felty, shaggy and being mighty on the whole body, the
powerful organism appearing all the more robust.
Its trunk is square or shows a somewhat lying rectangular
form. The head is a puff of hair rising above the surface of the body.
The tail is hanging down and the tip of it rises bending to horizontal.
Its white fur is rarely ideally nice.
It is a shepherd's dog species of Asiatic origin. In watching
and guarding cattle, property and house, it shows firm courage and
boldness. It attacks boldly, without a cry. It regards the area left to
its watching as its own and does not allow any stranger to put its foot
upon it. It is mistrustful. Head-It is broad, but fine, proportional to the body.
Neither does its thick and long hair seem it disproportionate.
The brain-skull is bulging. The stop line strikes one's eye
with its strength. The brain-skull is longer than the facial-nasal part.
Between the arches of the yoke-bone it shows a wide head-shape. The
arches of the eye-vault are well developed. The nose is not going to get
pointed. The "nasal mirror" is cut in right angle. The jowls are very
broad and of medium length, the jaw-bone and the mandible are richly
muscled. The "nasal mirror" is black colored as well as the eye-lid's
edge and the lip.
The teeth are vigorous, powerful, regular, of scissors-like
closing. The lips fit tightly to the teeth. The nook of the mouth is
fringed.
The eyes are straight cut, dark-brown colored. The eye-lid's
edge is tight.
The ears are of medium height, setting to the bulging crown
of the head and they take up immediately a definitely hanging direction,
their shape is long and extending down, showing rather a U shape. It
does not move its ears either in watching or in attacking position.
The neck forms with horizontal an angle of 35 degrees and, in
impassive attitude, it is held next to the continuation of the
back-line. It is of medium length and rather short. It has
no dewlap, there is no hair collar to be found on it. Forequarters- It is very difficult to judge the
forelimbs because of the long and shaggy hair. The fore limb is
column shaped. The shoulder-blade is somewhat steep, the curvature
of the shoulder comes to stand in the plane of the breast. The free
limbs derive from the broad breast, but the asunder-standing is firmly
set to the trunk and does not produce loose shoulders. Its bony
frame is strong, massive. its articulations are extensive, the paws big,
but not slack, rather compact, slate-grey colored. The sole-pad
is massive, elastic, the claws strong. Body- The withers are long enough and distinct in the
fore part. The back is short, the loin of medium length. The upper
line is broad, richly muscled. The narrowness of this part is
shown even by the gape of the coat. The hindquarters are wide, of
medium length, slightly sloping. The tail is set low and somewhat
outside in setting. It is distinctly hanging, its tip shows a rise,
bending to the horizontal. In state of excitement, it lifts its
tail not more than to the height corresponding to the upper line.
The hair is in this part almost always felty or clogged.
The hind limb is almost merging with the hindquarters and is to be
concluded at only from its proportions. The hind limb props the
trunk in a somewhat steep angle. In the continuation of the
hindquarters of medium length, there are required wide, sinewyplump
limbs. The thigh region should be long, otherwise the hanging down
hair of the limb would get narrow and that would be a fault.
The standing of the hind limb is regular when wide. Backwards
the paws are longer, but they are not slack. The bastard claws
are to be removed. Hide and Hair- The hide contains a lot of paint and is
slate-grey colored. The "nasal mirror, " the lips, the eyes-lid's
edge, the sole-pad are black or dark slate grey. It is good when
the gums and the roof of the mouth are equally dark pigmented.
Among the hair even the hide shows a slate-grey hue. Individuals
with diminished pigmentation or with pinkish hide are not wanted. Its
claws are grey.
The whole body is covered with long hair. Its hair consists
of rougher upper hair and finer fluff. The proportion of upper
hair and fluff determines the type of the fur. The shaggy
hair, inclined to get felty, is an essential requirement. But an
evenly and in a thick wavy down-running, cord-like hair is also to be
found. The rather tiny curls of these do not get felty at all or
at least in much minor extent. The cm; medium on the back, on the
side of the chest, on the region of the shoulder-blade, 15 to 22 cm; of
minor length on the jowls, on the eye-vault, on the crown of the head,
on the ears, on the neck and on the limbs, 10 to 18 cm. but it is the
shortest on the lips and on the lower part of the limbs, 9 to 11 cm.
After whelping, owing to distemper or insufficient fodder it
throws off a part of its hair, on the fore part of the trunk, at the
bottom of the belly and the chest and on the fore limbs as well;
exceptionally it throws off the the whole of its hair, but that of its
hindquarters. Such as "undressed" Komondor does not show a
pleasant figure, but this transitory state is only a physical flaw.
Its being so deprived of its hair is not fault; as it well is at an
exhibition.
The new-born puppy's hair is fluffy, fine threaded, shining
white, with snail-like or wavy run-down. After weaning this hair
is followed by a fur-like puppy hair, that does not get felty. The
puppy hair of the Komondor is of medium length and endows it with a
rather pleasant exterior. It happens at the age of 6-9 months.
Afterwards it gets constant hair and the shed bear-like hair furthers
the getting felty of the permanent coat.
The type of combed out hair is not wanted. Neither is
the completely uncared-for one. The hair of the Komondor is white-colored. Size and weight- The height of the withers measured
with a stick is:
with males, on the average.....80 cm.
with bitches, on the average...70 cm.
The under limit of the
height of the wither is:
with males................................65 cm.
with females.............................55 cm.
The relative measurement of the
single parts of the body is- in percentage of that of the withers-

The weight of the body is, with males 50-60 kgs., with
bitches 40-50 kgs. Motion- It is light, snug, measured. Its
step s stretched, space-uptaking. At day-time, it likes to like
about, but always in a way to be able to watch its area. At night,
it moves around continuously. Type faults, defects- The species shows but few
typefaults; it is intensely bred and all of a piece. it is bred of
old with identical characteristics.
Deficiencies that occur rarely are the following: small
figure, slack shoulder, loose, soft paws. Clump-footed standing at
the back. Deficient pigmentation on the eye-lid's edge, on the
lips, by chance on the "nasal mirror," frizzing tail. Faults about
the teeth, defective set of teeth, mainly among the incisors. Motives of exclusion- Short fur, no matter where it
occurs, flesh-colored hide-surface, upstanding light ears. Short
tail. Colored or pied hair. Slack organism if it occurs on
the whole body.
