Name - Komondor: Hungarian
shepherd's dog, called "Komondor": Canis familiaris
pastoralis villosus hungaricus, Raitsits, 1924.
General Characteristics, features, its uses.-
The species has a big body. Its exterior, its dignified behaviour
raise respect and astonishment and perhaps even fear in the onlooker. It
is not a kind species. Its structure is vigorous. Its long hair is
inclined to get felty, shaggy and being mighty on the whole body, the
powerful organism appearing all the more robust.
Its trunk is square or shows a somewhat lying rectangular
form. The head is a puff of hair rising above the surface of the body.
The tail is hanging down and the tip of it rises bending to horizontal.
Its white fur is rarely ideally nice.
It is a shepherd's dog species of Asiatic origin. In watching
and guarding cattle, property and house, it shows firm courage and
boldness. It attacks boldly, without a cry. It regards the area left to
its watching as its own and does not allow any stranger to put its foot
upon it. It is mistrustful.
Head-It is broad, but fine, proportional to the body.
Neither does its thick and long hair seem it disproportionate.
The brain-skull is bulging. The stop line strikes one's eye
with its strength. The brain-skull is longer than the facial-nasal part.
Between the arches of the yoke-bone it shows a wide head-shape. The
arches of the eye-vault are well developed. The nose is not going to get
pointed. The "nasal mirror" is cut in right angle. The jowls are very
broad and of medium length, the jaw-bone and the mandible are richly
muscled. The "nasal mirror" is black colored as well as the eye-lid's
edge and the lip.
The teeth are vigorous, powerful, regular, of scissors-like
closing. The lips fit tightly to the teeth. The nook of the mouth is
fringed.
The eyes are straight cut, dark-brown colored. The eye-lid's
edge is tight.
The ears are of medium height, setting to the bulging crown
of the head and they take up immediately a definitely hanging direction,
their shape is long and extending down, showing rather a U shape. It
does not move its ears either in watching or in attacking position.
The neck forms with horizontal an angle of 35 degrees and, in
impassive attitude, it is held next to the continuation of the
back-line. It is of medium length and rather short. It has
no dewlap, there is no hair collar to be found on it.
Forequarters- It is very difficult to judge the
forelimbs because of the long and shaggy hair. The fore limb is
column shaped. The shoulder-blade is somewhat steep, the curvature
of the shoulder comes to stand in the plane of the breast. The free
limbs derive from the broad breast, but the asunder-standing is firmly
set to the trunk and does not produce loose shoulders. Its bony
frame is strong, massive. its articulations are extensive, the paws big,
but not slack, rather compact, slate-grey colored. The sole-pad
is massive, elastic, the claws strong.
Body- The withers are long enough and distinct in the
fore part. The back is short, the loin of medium length. The upper
line is broad, richly muscled. The narrowness of this part is
shown even by the gape of the coat. The hindquarters are wide, of
medium length, slightly sloping. The tail is set low and somewhat
outside in setting. It is distinctly hanging, its tip shows a rise,
bending to the horizontal. In state of excitement, it lifts its
tail not more than to the height corresponding to the upper line.
The hair is in this part almost always felty or clogged.
The hind limb is almost merging with the hindquarters and is to be
concluded at only from its proportions. The hind limb props the
trunk in a somewhat steep angle. In the continuation of the
hindquarters of medium length, there are required wide, sinewyplump
limbs. The thigh region should be long, otherwise the hanging down
hair of the limb would get narrow and that would be a fault.
The standing of the hind limb is regular when wide. Backwards
the paws are longer, but they are not slack. The bastard claws
are to be removed.
Hide and Hair- The hide contains a lot of paint and is
slate-grey colored. The "nasal mirror, " the lips, the eyes-lid's
edge, the sole-pad are black or dark slate grey. It is good when
the gums and the roof of the mouth are equally dark pigmented.
Among the hair even the hide shows a slate-grey hue. Individuals
with diminished pigmentation or with pinkish hide are not wanted. Its
claws are grey.
The whole body is covered with long hair. Its hair consists
of rougher upper hair and finer fluff. The proportion of upper
hair and fluff determines the type of the fur. The shaggy
hair, inclined to get felty, is an essential requirement. But an
evenly and in a thick wavy down-running, cord-like hair is also to be
found. The rather tiny curls of these do not get felty at all or
at least in much minor extent. The cm; medium on the back, on the
side of the chest, on the region of the shoulder-blade, 15 to 22 cm; of
minor length on the jowls, on the eye-vault, on the crown of the head,
on the ears, on the neck and on the limbs, 10 to 18 cm. but it is the
shortest on the lips and on the lower part of the limbs, 9 to 11 cm.
After whelping, owing to distemper or insufficient fodder it
throws off a part of its hair, on the fore part of the trunk, at the
bottom of the belly and the chest and on the fore limbs as well;
exceptionally it throws off the the whole of its hair, but that of its
hindquarters. Such as "undressed" Komondor does not show a
pleasant figure, but this transitory state is only a physical flaw.
Its being so deprived of its hair is not fault; as it well is at an
exhibition.
The new-born puppy's hair is fluffy, fine threaded, shining
white, with snail-like or wavy run-down. After weaning this hair
is followed by a fur-like puppy hair, that does not get felty. The
puppy hair of the Komondor is of medium length and endows it with a
rather pleasant exterior. It happens at the age of 6-9 months.
Afterwards it gets constant hair and the shed bear-like hair furthers
the getting felty of the permanent coat.
The type of combed out hair is not wanted. Neither is
the completely uncared-for one. The hair of the Komondor is white-colored.
Size and weight- The height of the withers measured
with a stick is:
with males, on the average.....80 cm.
with bitches, on the average...70 cm.
The under limit of the height of the wither is:
with males................................65 cm.
with females.............................55 cm.
The relative measurement of the single parts of the body is- in percentage of that of the withers- measure with a stick:

The length of the ear comes up to the 60% of that of the
head.
The weight of the body is, with males 50-60 kgs., with
bitches 40-50 kgs.
Motion- It is light, snug, measured. Its
step s stretched, space-uptaking. At day-time, it likes to like
about, but always in a way to be able to watch its area. At night,
it moves around continuously.
Type faults, defects- The species shows but few
typefaults; it is intensely bred and all of a piece. it is bred of
old with identical characteristics.
Deficiencies that occur rarely are the following: small
figure, slack shoulder, loose, soft paws. Clump-footed standing at
the back. Deficient pigmentation on the eye-lid's edge, on the
lips, by chance on the "nasal mirror," frizzing tail. Faults about
the teeth, defective set of teeth, mainly among the incisors.
Motives of exclusion- Short fur, no matter where it
occurs, flesh-colored hide-surface, upstanding light ears. Short
tail. Colored or pied hair. Slack organism if it occurs on
the whole body.
